Gareth Pon is an extremely multi-talented film maker, photo shooter and Best African instagramer of 2014. Studio22 recently got to talk to Gareth about who is he is and what his work is all about. Here’s what he had to say…
Tell us a little bit about yourself, what genre best describes your work?
I am a half Mauritian, half Chinese, South African born Asian who loves to create. I’m a filmmaker & photographer, have a BA in Visual Communication and in the past have dabbled in Fashion Design, Architecture & Retail marketing. I now find myself passionately seeking out stories to tell from all around the world.
How would you describe your photography style?
I would say the genre of my work is very documentary/journalistic. However I always find myself exploring other genres continually.
If not a photographer you would have been?
An Astronaut, chef, brain surgeon or architect in that order.
How do you keep yourself motivated and your photography fresh?
I keep learning and never allow myself to feel that I’ve mastered something. I have the curse and blessing of getting bored very easily! SO I find myself continually seeking out ways to be inspired. I also draw inspiration from other creative mediums and try bring that inspiration back into my style.
What type of social media platforms do you use and how do you utilise them for displaying your work?
Instagram as a main source & Vimeo for video. I utilise them to grow my personal brand and also as a great platform to get feedback. Exposure on the platform is also something that’s maximised through engagement with the relevant social media’s communities.
What is your favourite photographic accessory other than your camera or your iPhone?
My Gopro!
