"Best quality photo prints I've seen in YEARS! Beautiful matte photo paper, absolutely stunning colours. Took a chance and ordered online, no adjustments to my images, no idea what to expect… What a surprise and absolute pleasure to receive my small, well packaged order, so promptly. Best price, professional quality, super helpful when I called for help with payment too. I can wholeheartedly recommend Studio 22 … 122%."

Our Story

Studio22 is a premier provider of Photo Books, Photographic Printing, Photo Products and Wall Art, based in Cape Town, South Africa. Founded in 1993 as a photographic studio, the company leveraged its expertise as professional photographers to create high-quality books using genuine Fuji Crystal Archive photographic paper. As the owner and operator of one of Cape Town’s leading professional digital photo labs, Studio22 offers an unparalleled outlet for its albums, prints and framing.

Our roots as a family business date back to the 1980s when Colin and Marianna Sunkel opened their first photographic studio, Colin Sunkel Photography. Over time, the business expanded to include a Black & White darkroom, two Color darkrooms, a studio, and a small retail area. Custom picture framing was also added to the list of services. In 1993, Kurt Sunkel joined the business after completing his studies in photography and the company was incorporated as Colin Sunkel Photography cc.

As the business continued to grow, the lab also expanded. Kurt and Colin handled all repairs and maintenance themselves, a factor that would have a positive impact in the future. In 1999, Kurt took time off to work in the UK, and that is where he got the inspiration to start Studio22, as we know it today. Upon returning to South Africa, he conducted market research among local photographers and received overwhelming positive feedback. With this support, Studio22 was established as a full-time professional lab operated, by qualified and experienced photographers. Over time, Studio22 has become a well-known and respected name across South Africa and beyond, serving a diverse clientele.
