Choosing the Right Size Print for Different Rooms

If there’s one printing mistake I see more than anything else—it’s going too small.

Clients pick a photo they love, but when it lands on the wall, it just floats there. A beautiful image, lost in a sea of blank space. They try to fill it in with extra frames, candles, art, clocks—you name it—but the moment’s gone. And all it needed was the right size.

Let’s fix that.

The Golden Rule: Size to the Wall, Not the Photo

Your print size shouldn’t depend on how good the photo is. It should depend on where it’s going. A tiny image in a massive lounge can feel underwhelming. But the same photo—blown up big and bold—becomes a focal point that turns heads and sparks stories.

Personally, I’ve always leaned toward A0 for a strong, standalone piece. It’s big. It commands space. And when you’ve got a photo with heart—it deserves to be seen.

A Print Story from Paris

In my previous home, we had one giant vertical print in the entrance hallway—larger than A0. It was a black and white image I took in Paris. Yes, cliché… it was the Eiffel Tower. But here’s the thing—it wasn’t some tourist-store photo. It was my image, from my trip, with a subtle artistic twist that made it feel timeless. It didn’t just decorate the space—it defined it.

And that’s what size can do. It doesn’t just scale an image—it scales its presence.

Suggested Print Sizes by Room

Here’s a quick reference guide to help choose:

🛋 Living Room

Main Wall: A0 or 100x150cm for bold presence

Above a Couch: A2 to A0, depending on space

Gallery Wall: Mix of A4, A3, and square formats in a layout

🍽 Dining Area

• Horizontal panoramic works well (30x90cm or A1 landscape)

• For symmetry: two or three A3/A2 prints side-by-side

🛏 Bedroom

Above Bed: A2 or A1 landscape, or a pair of A3s

Side Walls: Narrow verticals or framed quotes (A4 or 20x40cm)

🧑‍💼 Home Office

• Statement motivational prints (A2/A3)

• Mix in small framed memories to create a cozy, personalized feel

🪞 Hallways or Entryways

• One bold vertical (A1 or larger) to elongate the space

• Slim panoramic shots work well in long passages

Too Small? Too Big? Here’s the Trick

Most people go too small, which is harder to recover from without adding clutter. Going too big is rare—and often looks great if it’s a single print on a clear wall.

A trick I recommend (especially for online shoppers)?

Use paper templates.

Cut out the size you’re thinking of (or tape out the outline) and stick it on the wall for a day or two. Live with it. It’s the fastest way to know if it’s the right fit.

Final Thoughts

Prints aren’t just décor—they’re expressions of your life. When sized right, they don’t just fit your space—they elevate it.

So whether it’s a quiet memory from home or a bold shot from Paris, give it the size it deserves.
