Back in the days my father was a full-time photographer (waaaay back), clients would ask for a family portrait, and what they wanted was a large framed print or canvas print on their wall. I don't think much has really changed today, I think most families still want a large family portrait, and yes, maybe more.
If photographers are not offering their clients what they really want, the client might never print the images, they might just keep it on their phones, send it to family and post if to social media. There was a time that photographers would shoot and burn images to a CD and sell the CD to the client and boom, that was that. That was mostly during the transition from Film to digital and I think photographers were trying to find new ways to do business.
We are glad to see it is no longer a "Shoot and Burn" industry, new photographers entered the market, with strong business ethics, and so the market has changed, or, did these photographers listen and answer the questions of what the market really wanted? All I can say, it is a very big market and there are so many brilliant photographers making a living with their craft. It is wonderful to see how many photographers are now able to specialise in niche categories where only a few years ago, one photographer would try do everything, now even the pet photography market is wonderfully supported and strong. Keep Shooting!
