Studio Photography Workshop – Comprehensive 3 Session Course hosted over 3 days  – 15th, 16th & 17th of April, 2015

Do you love to shoot with ambient light, but want to achieve more?  Would you like to take your photography to the next level? Would you like to work in a studio but don’t know where to start? Do you want to learn to use off camera flash in a creative way?

Then join Ben Tyler for a comprehensive 3 session course on Studio Photography hosted at Studio22 on the 15th, 16th and 17th of April from 9: 30 am to 13:30 pm. Learn to use studio light, off camera flashes, and create professional results on location or in the studio.

Who is Ben Tyler?

Ben was fortunate to secure an apprenticeship with one of Cape Town’s most awarded photographers Colin Sunkel.  Ben worked for Colin, and his company Studio22 (professional studio and photographic lab) for many years before moving back to the UK.

This is a comprehensive course run over three sessions, that will cover both the theory of how to work in the studio and give attendees practical experience working with studio lighting equipment.  The course will conclude with a model in the studio to give attendees a chance to practise what they have learnt.

During these sessions we will be covering both traditional studio equipment and working with off camera flashes to achieve studio like lighting.  The course will go beyond just working in the studio to covering working on location.

Session One: Theory

The aim of this session is to teach the attendees the theory behind working in the studio. Attendees will learn the “why” behind studio lighting, rather than just learn different lighting diagrams or lighting set-ups.

  • Camera settings in the studio.
  • Understanding power ratios, intensity of light and their relation to aperture settings.
  • Understanding the inverse square law of light.
  • Equipment you need, studio equipment, strobist etc.
  • Question & Answer time.

Session Two: Learning the Light

The aim of this session is to get attendees comfortable with using the equipment in a studio, and to understand what it does.

  • Using a studio light
  • Using a light meter
  • Different Light Modifiers and their effects
  • Understanding lighting ratios and their effects.
  • How to work with Models.
  • Preparing for your shoot
  • Question & Answer time.

Session Three: Practicing what we preach.

The aim of this session is to put into practice what has been learned in the previous two sessions. We feel it’s important that attendees get a chance to try what they have learnt. During this session there will be a model for the attendees to photograph.

  • Shooting with one light and adding more over time.
  • High Key Photography
  • Low Key Photography
  • Attendees get a chance to shoot, trying out different lighting setups.
  • Question & Answer time.
